Britain before the Anglo-Saxons

Using artist's impressions, Y5 wrote descriptions of a town in Roman Britain. These were compiled to make this script, which should help you imagine that you are in a Roman British town.

Imagine you are travelling through time. Feel the thump as you land on the earth. You look around and see a wall. And in the wall you see a tower.

You walk up the west tower. You stare up to the stone building looming over yor head. You can feel the soft comforting wind blow against your face and press your toga up to your legs.

Soldiers watch you as you pass through the gates. You walk through the stone archway and hear noises, laughter and shouts. Leaning forward you spot a cart full of stone jars and carvings.

The soldiers have come from victory and from their party.

Take a moment and look around. What can you see?

There are children playing in the streets and entertainers on the streets with people laughing and chatting around them.

You smell the strong scent of incense.

You walk over a cracked and jagged wooden bridge to a massive stone wall. You hear the gallop of horses hooves against stone and the shouting and cheering from a nearby ampitheatre.

You walk back across a moss-covered stone bridge. As you carry on down the dusty pavement, people wave and a dove calls to you high up in the rafters of the old bakery.

You look to your left and see an armoury with sharp, silver weapons leaning against the wall

You hear shouting from the market and the strong smell of wine and smoke. You see people selling goods like clay pots and wine holders

You smell water and the strong scent of copper polish

You hear loud cries and cries of glee. You hear shouts and jeers of laughter.

You step on the dusty sand flooring. You go to the top of the coliseum to the emperor’s throne and begin to watch the entertainment. There laid out before you is the beautiful sight of the whole city.
